Loop Electrocautery Excision Procedure (LEEP)

Services • Onsite Surgery

Loop electrocautery excision procedure (LEEP) is a procedure for removing abnormal cells from the cervix.

How It Works:

  • Patient lies on her back and places legs in stirrups;
  • Dr. Bhatia inserts a speculum into the vagina in the same way as with the pelvic exam;
  • Local anesthesia is used to prevent the pain;
  • A thin wire loop that acts like a scalpel is inserted into the vagina to the cervix;
  • The wire is used to excise the abnormal cells;
  • The wire is removed and post-op care is applied accordingly (for any bleeding that may have occurred)

Purpose:

LEEP is a treatment for moderate to severely abnormal pap smears. And it can provide tissue for diagnosis for pathology.

Patient Requirements:

All patients must have had:

  • Pap smears with any abnormal result; and
  • Colposcopy for results

Recovery:

Patients may return to regular activities the next day.
